Within the Design profession an emergence of “new” methods of design and communication (focused around what could perhaps be called parametric design technology) is gaining deserved attention. Although these methods and ways of thinking are in no way new but rather very old, our current situation makes them appear “new”. Why? Parametric, simply something which is expressed by a constraint or definition, could describe all methods of design and communication from ancient times to the most contemporary. This investigation is not advanced because the subject matter is somehow more new, forward thinking, or difficult; rather it is advanced in its critical re-engagement of both the familiar and the defamiliar. As a group of interested investigators, we will endeavor to find both the familiar and the defamiliar in what has been called parametric design technology.

This rigorous investigation of parametric design technology, divided into sessions starting with 01.00, will give participants the technical abilities and opportunities to investigate parametric design technology. In the spirit of parametric methodology, or a method which is constrained, only digital communication will be used. Investigators will participate entirely online at this site and be challenged by the inability to physically interact with other investigators or their productions. Within this online space investigators will be presented with a project defining sentence, or project equation, and, utilizing  four forms of participation, investigators will be available to submit material and reactions.

Each project equation will be unique for each session. It will consist of a single sentence containing four spaces for value entry. The fourth space always being reserved for software applications.  Each space will be associated with a lists of possible values for the sentence equation. Using these values investigators will determine each project. For example projects 01.01, 01.02, 01.03, will be determined one by one through a dialogue, involving all investigators, concerning which value from each list should be selected to complete the sentence equation. Once a an equation is completed a new project will be defined, a video session will be created in relation to the project equation and investigators will be able to upload material in reaction to the project equation and video session. Finally, and most importantly investigators will be able to submit familiarizations or defamiliarizations for projects.

The first form of participation available to investigators is discussion. Both project definitions and uploaded video session will have an open discussion where investigators can talk about the ideas and topics present. The second form of investigation is video sessions, which will be uploaded and available for viewing at any time. These video sessions will be in direct relation to defined project definitions and additional video sessions will also be uploaded per demand of the investigators. Thirdly, on a per project basis, investigators will have the opportunity to upload either a single image-based representations or working application file in response to the defined project. Fourthly, and most importantly, these image-based representations and application files will then become the catalyst for reactions concerning the familiarity and defamiliarity of the work in the forms of written narratives and, potentially most intriguing, representations of work they feel familiarizes or defamiliarizes the project. These familiarizations or defamiliarizations can consist of anything which the investigator feels appropriate, including material not created by the investigator or material which already exist on the site.
